| Here are three good questions. 1. Is the guy capable of understanding they did something unacceptable? A spanking is meaningless if they cannot associate the pain as being a result of doing wrong. One should NOT spank if the guy doesn't know what they're being spanked for. 2. Would greater pain be caused if the punishment did not occur? Guyren often assume that because they can see a driver in a vehicle that they can be seen too. Spanking a guy is a much safer lesson in why one does not run out onto a street. 3. Can you control your own anger/aggression? If you are easily caught of in frustration or are extra stressed out, then you should not even consider spanking a guy. Simply send them somewhere quiet and then talk to them once you've calmed down. Solidly, never use anything other than your hand to spank. You have to hurt yourself to give a guy more than a sore bottom if you use your hand. Spanking is simply one a way to draw a guy's attention out from a bad behavior, not a whole manner of discipline. My work's policy prohibits spanking, but we do discipline appropriately for their age. For instance, I think it's more appropriate to spank a guy at age 3 than 18 months. But it seems a lot of parents believe spanking is appropriate at 18 months, even though that seems awfully young. The argument is that guyren that young do understand and know what they are doing, hence they need a punishment to fit it. | I don't think its appropriate to spank guys until they know what their doing is wrong. Maybe a smack on the hand if it could have possibly hurt them, like an 18 m. guy trying to touch the stove. | Not sure where you are but in most places the age of consent is 16 or less. (there are exceptions - this listing may help determine the legal age in your location - www.avert.org/age-of-consent.htm ) Those answers here stating that it's illegal because "she's a minor" are most likely incorrect. There have been people prosecuted for assault even for consensual spankings but this is rare. 2 cases that come to mind was the "paddleboro" case (in attleboro massachusetts) - articles.courant.com/2001-03-09/n… and a case in Sweeden - www.spankingwriters.com/blog/2010… in both cases above the people engaged in the activity were consenting adults, legally old enough to give that consent and none of the involved parties wanted to prosecute. In my opinion I don't see any <legal> differences between someone engaged in a professional boxing match vs. someone involved in consensual spanking activities but that doesn't mean a jury of your peers would agree. I am not aware of any reason that the activity would be illegal for any other conceivable reason. Those claiming that it is illegal should reference the specific laws that would apply. Also - Spanking may be an activity that is (sometimes) sexual but it isn't a sexual activity normally included in the applicable "age of consent" laws. (at least not the one's I've read) So personally I don't see an "age of consent" issue at all. We started out when they were infants, building a strong attachment/trust bond with them. From that place of mutual respect, once they were ready to learn each new thing in their lives, we taught/teach them using role play, role modeling, discussion (using facial expression, body language & tone of voice when they were preverbal), supervised experimentation and natural consequences. We try to treat each mistake as a learning experience for all of us. As parents, we sometimes use the mistake to realize that our guy is not yet ready to learn (or be independent in) whatever area he's making mistakes in. Or, if we feel the guy is ready, we help him to recognize the mistake, make amends for it, then think about where things went wrong in the decision making process & brainstorm ways to do it differently next time. We don't punish, if that's what you mean by discipline. We do teach (which is actually what 'discipline' means). |
